How TGSS made tracking stolen cars a breeze
Reimagining fleet security
Ever stolen a car? Us neither. But if we had, we’d hope it wasn’t secured by Track Global Security Solutions (TGSS).
TGSS go beyond fleet telematics to make sure vehicles are properly monitored and secured, using covert tracking devices with battery-powered GPS. But this powerful solution to high-end fleet security was powered by legacy software: slow, unwieldy, and non-scalable. It wasn’t giving users the high-end experience they would expect.
Since F12 Consult came on board, they’ve saved 40% of infrastructure costs and increased efficiency.
The Story of TGSS
Historically a part of IMS Group, TGSS became an independent entity in 2024. They provide fleet telematics for vans and high-end cars, with a specialisation in security monitoring.
Traditionally, fleet security monitoring depended on a device connected to the car battery. But TGSS aren’t a traditional company. Their sleeper devices are covertly placed in the vehicle with an integral battery. Those devices can then send out GPS alerts to monitor the exact location of vehicles in real time — even if the vehicle battery is disabled.
As soon as a vehicle is reported stolen, users can pinpoint its exact location — and recover it.
The opportunity: System modernisation
When TGSS broke off from IMS Group, they brought a powerful legacy system with them. By 2024 though, that legacy system was in desperate need of modernisation.
TGSS used Microsoft Azure to run the portal on their old IMS infrastructure (which, of course, came with a cost).
Customers and users could log in and manage their fleet security, but over the years it had become excruciatingly slow and painful to use. Vehicle location updates were lagging by hours, so stolen vehicles just couldn’t be located in real time.
It was starting to have a massive impact on their reputation.
Then, the team secured funding to transfer their infrastructure to Amazon.
They just needed the right team to manage that transfer, and with F12 Consult’s telematics background, TGSS knew we were the perfect fit for the job.
Why TGSS Chose F12 Consult
The team at TGSS already had a working relationship with Kevin and Phil from F12 Consult.
They knew we were the go-to team for projects like this. They knew we had the expertise, not only in the technical side of things but also in knowing the telematics sector from the inside out.
They didn’t even have to consider other options: F12 were the best, and TGSS needed the best.
How F12 Consult Responded
This was one of the most complex projects our team had seen in their combined 150+ years software engineering careers.
The databases were endlessly complicated. It used outdated technology. The system had been added to so much over the years that the TGSS team weren’t even sure what some of the portals did.
So of course, we rolled up our sleeves and got stuck in.
First, we delved into the dusty corners of the legacy system, piecing together the requirements and filling in the knowledge gaps left by developers who had long since left the team.
We moved all the legacy systems, the database, the old portals, and the ingestion mechanisms for these devices into Amazon, and then we rewrote the ingestion pieces to be infinitely scalable.
All the while, the TGSS platform was still live for their customers.
After rewriting, we needed to redirect all the devices onto TGSS’s infrastructure.
We dual-ran both systems until we had full confidence in the new platform and gave TGSS customers a new portal to log into. To the users, it was seamless, but behind the scenes, there were a lot of moving parts.
The Results
TGSS finally have a slick, scalable platform, running on their own infrastructure.
They know they can rely on F12 Consult for first-line support, and that the platform is continuously improving and being updated.
Ultimately, though, TGSS and their customers know exactly where the vehicles are, when they most need to know it.
Carl Howarth, Technical Director, at TGSS said:
“Breaking away from IMS meant we had to stand on our own two feet—fast. Thanks to the expertise of F12 Consult and the support from AWS MAP, we lifted our entire telematics platform onto AWS in record time. Now, our scalable, modern architecture is ready for the future.”
We’ve untangled and modernised one of the most complex legacy systems our team has ever seen. Stolen vehicles tracked with TGSS can now be found in minutes, not hours, on a fast, easy-to-use, scalable platform. TGSS are finally able to give users the high-end experience they expect. Give us a call to see how we can modernise your legacy telematics system.
